Was immense Lobbyausgaben vermuten ließen, geht nun aus einer kürzlich geleakten Lobbystrategie von Google hervor. Sie zeigt, dass der Konzern alle Register zieht, um die unerwünschten neuen Regeln zu stoppen. EU-Kommissar*innen will Google gegeneinander ausspielen. Die hauseigene Plattform YouTube soll politisch genutzt werden. Die Coronakrise und den Digitalisierungsschub will man sich noch auf einer anderen Ebene zunutze machen, indem man neue Regeln für digitale Plattformen als Innovationshemmnis brandmarkt.

Für diese aggresive Strategie steht dem Techkonzern ein breites Lobby-Netzwerk zur Verfügung, das in Teilen weiterhin intransparent agiert.
Damit können irreführende, von Konzerninteressen geleitete Informationen verbreitet werden. Google arbeitet dabei stark mit sogenannten Denkfabriken zusammen. Ein Beispiel: Das European Centre for International Political Economy (ECIPE) hat kürzlich eine von Google finanzierte “Studie” zu den Regeln für digitale Plattformen veröffentlicht, in der die Denkfabrik behauptet, die Regeln hätten einen immensen Verlust des Bruttoinlandsproduktes zur Folge. Die dazu veröffentlichten Zahlen sind jedoch laut dem ehemaligen Chefökonom der EU-Wettbewerbsdirektion, einem ausgewiesenen Experten in diesem Bereich, völlig haltlos.
Wir haben ECIPE mit den Gegenstimmen zur “Studie” konfrontiert und Google dazu aufgefordert, seine Zahlungen an den Thinktank offenzulegen.
